Shema was a daily prayer for ancient Israelites and is still recited by Jewish people today.
It comes from Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and expresses the belief in the one true God, as well as remembers God's command to keep the scriptures (Law) always before them. When Shema is spoken aloud in Hebrew, the Word "Adonai" is used instead of the written word Yahweh, because it is considered too holy to speak that word out loud. English translates this into "the LORD." Because of this tradition, I've decided to use the word Adonai in my artwork.
------
"Hear, O Israel: Adonai is our God, Adonai is One! And you shall love Adonai your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way, when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates." - Deuteronomy 6:4-9
